In November 2012, more than 100 women and children were raped, beaten & abused in Minova a small town in the Congo. The atrocities took place in a 10-day frenzy by members of the Congolese Armed Forces.
Due to this case causing a national outcry as well as a huge amount of pressure from world powers, Congo was forced to trial the accused. Over 1000 witnesses and more than 200 victims were represented however of the 39 accused, none were charged apart from 2 lower ranking officers who were acquitted shortly after.
The devastation didn’t end there, in addition to there being zero justice, many of the husbands to the victims left and neglected their wives and families as they believed them to be damaged/impure.
Through the overwhelming amount of darkness, these women pulled together. Bravery, patience and open hearts brought these women back to life. Everyday they crop the fields, love and care for their families with the support of each other. We often admire celebrities and women in the spotlight, yet truly, these Minova women and the strength, charisma that they attain - THIS is what we should be admiring and celebrating. Women with not just mental strength but physical too.
I’d rather rep the Minova women on my back then anyone else.
